5 reasons why dogs kill chickensWhy Do Dogs Kill Chickens?

It’s not an unusual or abnormal behavior for dogs to kill chickens. Here are some common reasons why dogs kill chickens:

1.  Hunting.  Many dog breeds have a long history of hunting.  Chickens running around can certainly trigger their primal urge to hunt and kill prey.

2.  Lack or proper dog training.  Dogs have to be trained to understand that chickens are off-limits, just as small children, cats, or other small animals.

3.  Playing too rough.  Sometimes the dog’s intention is to play with the chickens, not kill them.  Dogs sometimes don’t realize how strong they are compared to small animals.

4.  They’re bored.  Dogs who don’t get enough exercise and mental stimulation can develop all sorts of behavior issues.  If they’re exposed to chickens, they may see that as fun!

5.  Anxiety or stress.  Stress or anxiety in dogs can sometimes lead to aggressive behaviors.  If you feel like your dog may be anxious or stressed out, read my post, How to Calm Dogs With Anxiety (includes video).

Understanding why your dog is killing chickens can certainly help in getting it solved.  Make sure your dog is supervised, getting enough exercise, and that they’ve been properly trained around chickens.
