How Does Online Service Dog Training Work?
Online service dog training allows you to train your own dog using lessons, videos and professional guidance instead of sending your dog away to a trainer. This can be especially appealing for people who want to participate directly in their dog’s training and develop a strong working relationship with their service dog.
A quality program should provide a clear training progression rather than leaving you to piece together information from random videos and articles.
What is the Best Online Service Dog Training Program?
The best program depends partly on what tasks your service dog needs to perform. Someone training a psychiatric service dog may need a different program than someone training a diabetic alert or seizure alert dog.
I recommend looking for a program that provides structured lessons, clear instructions, access to support when you need help and training appropriate for your particular disability-related needs.
Service Dog Training School International
One of my favorite options is Service Dog Training School International. The school specializes in online service and support animal training and offers programs for several different types of service dogs.
I particularly like that this isn’t simply a collection of generic dog training videos. The programs are organized around specific service dog needs, and students have access to professional support while working through their training.

Is Online Service Dog Training Right for You?
Online service dog training can be a good choice if you want to train your own service dog, prefer working at your own pace and are comfortable following structured instructions at home. It can also make professional training resources available without requiring you to live near a specialized service dog trainer.
However, training a service dog requires time, consistency and realistic expectations. Not every dog is suited to service work, and completing an online course by itself does not override applicable laws or public-access requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions About Online Service Dog Training
Can I Train My Own Service Dog Online?
Online programs can provide structured instruction and professional guidance while you train your dog at home. Whether a particular dog can successfully become a service dog depends on factors including temperament, health, behavior and the tasks the dog needs to perform.
How Long Does It Take to Train a Service Dog?
There is no single training timeline for every service dog. Training time depends on the dog, the handler, previous training and the complexity of the tasks being taught. Consistent practice is more important than rushing through a program.
Can You Train a Psychiatric Service Dog Online?
Yes, specialized online programs are available for psychiatric service dog training. Service Dog Training School International offers programs specifically designed for psychiatric service dogs as well as several other types of service work.
What Should I Look for in an Online Service Dog Training Course?
Look for structured lessons, training appropriate to your specific needs, clear instructions, professional support and information about public behavior and task training. I also prefer programs that provide students with a way to ask questions when problems arise.
How Much Does it Cost to Hire a Service Dog Trainer?
According to TheDogAlliance.org, the cost of training a service dog can vary depending on the tasks and the level of specialization required. Here’s a breakdown. Basic Mobility assistance training costs between $10,000 and $30,000, covering basic obedience and specific tasks like retrieving objects.
My Recommendation for Online Service Dog Training
I’ve been reviewing dog training programs for more than 10 years, and I’ve seen a wide range of online training options during that time. Service dog training is specialized work, so I wanted to find a program that went beyond ordinary dog obedience training.
When I was introduced to Service Dog Training School International, I spent time reviewing their programs and communicating directly with the school. My experience proved them to be thorough, while also showing genuine caring for their students and the people who depend on service dogs.
That’s why I’m comfortable recommending Service Dog Training School International to readers who want structured online help training their own service dog.
