Choosing the right location for your cat’s litter box can help prevent litter box problems and encourage consistent use. Cats prefer a litter box that is clean, quiet, easy to access, and placed in an area where they feel safe and comfortable.
- Keep the litter box away from your cat’s food and water bowls. Cats generally do not like to eat near the area where they eliminate.
- Choose a location that offers some privacy without isolating the cat completely. A quiet corner or low-traffic area often works well.
- Make sure the area is well lit and easy to access. Dark, cluttered spaces may make some cats nervous or reluctant to use the box.
- Your cat should be able to reach the litter box at all times without relying on someone to open a door or move obstacles.
- Once your cat is comfortable with the litter box location, avoid moving it unless absolutely necessary. If you do need to relocate it, move it gradually over several days.
- Homes with multiple cats should have multiple litter boxes. It’s usually best to spread them out instead of placing them side by side.
