How to Stop Your Dog From Peeing in the House

If your dog keeps peeing in the house, it’s usually caused by incomplete potty training, unclear routines, anxiety, or missed signals — not bad behavior. This guide explains how to stop your dog from peeing in the house using clear, positive training steps that work for both puppies and adult dogs. You’ll learn why indoor accidents happen, what to fix first, and how to reinforce the right habits consistently.

Dog Potty Training Made Easy

A clear, step-by-step potty training approach makes it much easier to teach a dog where and when to go. Positive methods help dogs understand expectations without fear or confusion, making training faster and more reliable at any age.

I want to tell you about a free, step-by-step puppy potty training video series called, Potty Training Made Easy.

In this series, Professional Dog Trainer, Doggy Dan, shows you step-by-step how to teach a dog not to pee in the house.

It’s centered around puppies, but the steps are the same no matter what the dog’s age. Later in this post, I’ll refer you to a tutorial more specific to adult dogs if you prefer.

Dog Peeing in the House?

Indoor accidents are often caused by routine gaps, stress, or inconsistent reinforcement. Addressing these issues with structure, supervision, and proper cleanup can dramatically reduce accidents and help dogs succeed.  Here are 8 steps you can take to stop your dog from peeing in the house:

1. Rule Out Medical Issues.  Make sure your dog doesn’t have a urinary tract infection or other health issues that could cause incontinence or frequent urination.

2. Establish a Routine.  This should include regular potty breaks, especially right after waking up, eating or playing.  Keeping a consistent schedule will go a long way in preventing accidents!

3.  Reward good behavior and don’t be mean!  Always give your dog praise and treats immediately after they pee outside.  This helps them associate peeing outside with a positive outcome.

If your dog pees in the house, realize it is not the dog’s fault.  Never punish your dog for peeing in the house!  It’s your job as a pet owner to learn how to teach the dog to go potty outside.

Use the free professional training from Doggy Dan to get the training right.  There’s no sense being mean to the dog.  It’ll only cause anxiety and worsen the problem!

4.  Supervise or confine your dog.  While you’re doing correct potty training, always supervise your dog to keep an eye out for signs they need to go outside.  If necessary, you can confine your dog to a laundry room or certain part of the house when you’re not home.

Crating your dog may help as well, but please make sure to get instructions on crating a dog.  Being in a crate can be terribly stressful for a dog if you don’t do it right.

Doggy Dan has a free crate training tutorial.  Take advantage of it!

5. Learn effective potty training techniques.  When your dog is outside, repeat a consistent command such as “go potty” while they’re peeing then immediately reward them with a treat and/or praise.

Also, take them to the same spot each time.  It’ll help them remember what they’re out there for!

Doggy Dan’s free video series will help you learn the most effective potty training techniques.

6. Clean up accidents the right way.  If your dog pees in the house, use an enzyme-based cleaner to remove the scent of urine.  This will discourage your dog from peeing in the same place again.  I recommend an inexpensive product called, Nature’s Miracle.

For more help on cleaning up dog urine, read my post, How to Remove Pet Urine from Carpet (includes video).

7. Address stress or anxiety.  Dogs being stressed out or anxious can certainly contribute to peeing in the house.  If you think your dog may be anxious, read my post, How to Calm Dogs with Anxiety (includes video).

8.  Consistency is key.  Always be patient and consistent when potty training your dog.  Realize it takes time, but with the right techniques, your dog will catch on!
