A Pup Above Dog Food Pros
A Pup Above dog food uses non-GMO vegetables and responsibly sourced meats, all human grade, and uses a sous-vide cooking method. What does this mean?
Non-GMO vegetables are vegetables grown in nourishing soils, higher in antioxidants and nutrients.
Responsibility sourced, all natural meat doesn’t contain antibiotics or growth hormones.
Human grade ingredients are ingredients you could eat yourself, made in a USDA human-grade facility.
Sous-vide cooking is a method of cooking where food is vacuum sealed in a bag and cooked in a water bath at a specific temperature. It enhances flavor, improves digestibility and retains nutrients.
A Pup Above doesn’t require a subscription like other fresh dog food brands (but you get a discount if you subscribe).
Your dog’s meals will arrive to your door in vacuum-sealed packages. Their packing is recyclable, eco-friendly and sustainable.
One more thing: A Pup Above offers both wet dog food and dry dog food, unlike most other fresh dog food brands.
A Pup Above Dog Food Complaints
A Pup Above is considered expensive by some dog owners because it costs more than kibble and costs more than some other fresh dog food brands.
Some people think it’s a pain that you have to have available freezer space to store the food.
Some dog owners say A Pup Above is slow on shipping.
Also, A Pup Above doesn’t offer personalized meal plans like some other brands like The Farmer’s Dog.
A Pup Above Dog Food Pricing
I want to say first, before we talk about pricing, that you should provide your dog with the highest quality dog food that you can afford. I personally believe fresh dog food is the best choice for your dog’s overall health, but you also have to be able to put a roof over the dog’s head!
If you can afford A Pup Above or another brand of fresh dog food, that’s great! But if you can’t, don’t feel guilty. As responsible dog owners, we have to consider the whole picture when it comes to the care of our pets. We have to provide shelter, heat, food, water, a bed, toys, treats and medical care. Plan your budget so you can make the right decision about every aspect of your dog’s care.
Ok, back to pricing…
You can get sampler pack with a 3-pound bag of each of their four flavors (Beef Pot Roast, Porky’s Luau, Turkey Pawella and Chicka Chicka Bow Wow) for $151.96 for a one-time purchase or $136.70 if you subscribe (10% less). They also have 7-pound bags.
You can also purchase one flavor at a time in two-3-pound-bags packages for $79.98 for a one-time purchase or $71.90 if you subscribe.
It appears purchasing the packages with all four flavors is a bit cheaper. Check their website for exact, up-to-date pricing.
A Pup Above Dog Food Ingredients
All of the ingredients in A Pup Above’s dog food recipes are vet recommended, 100% human grade with non-GMO vegetables, plus bone broth and super foods like turmeric, thyme and parsley for joint and digestive support.
They provide very thorough information on their website about exactly where they source their ingredients.
I personally have not eaten processed foods in more than a decade. About 90% of the time, anyway! For the most part, my diet consists of whole, healthy, natural foods. I’m so glad that more and more pet owners are realizing that this is not just beneficial for humans, but for our pets as well!
By the way, if you have a cat, there’s fresh food available for them too! Check out Smalls.com for fresh cat food.
A Pup Above Feeding Guidelines
A Pup Above provides a detailed feeding guide on their website based on your dog’s weight. They tell you how much to feed your dog daily (measured in cups), and they also suggest breaking up the daily amount into two servings.
How much your dog should eat can vary based on things like age and activity level. You should work with your veterinarian when deciding exactly how much food to give your dog each day.
By the way, if you’re checking into fresh dog food as a way to help your dog lose weight, that’s smart! You can also get help with this by reading my post, How to Help Your Dog Lose Weight(includes video).
A Pup Above vs Other Fresh Dog Food Brands
A Pup Above focuses on creating high protein, low carbohydrate recipes that are nutritious and delicious! Their gently cooked meals have an average of 50% more protein than other gently cooked foods.
They also add bone broth to their gently cooked recipes, which offers several heath benefits such as better digestion and a healthier coat and skin.
Click here for more information on how they compare to other fresh food brands.
You should know that if your dog suffers from any sort of kidney or liver disease, high-protein dog food may not be the best choice. Always keep your vet in the loop about what you’re feeding your dog! Especially if they’re elderly or have medical issues (the dog, not the vet LOL).
A Pup Above vs. The Farmer’s Dog
Both of these brands offer human grade, fresh dog food. But there are some differences:
Cooking method: A Pup Above, sous-vide. The Farmer’s Dog, gently cooked.
Packaging: A Pup Above, vacuum-sealed. The Farmer’s Dog, plastic pouches.
Food texture: A Pup Above, chunky, stew-like. The Farmer’s Dog, softer, mashed.
Meal plans: A Pup Above, no meal plans. The Farmer’s Dog, personalized meal plans.
Price: A Pup Above, slightly higher. The Farmer’s Dog, lower pricing for small dogs.
When researching the comparison between A Pup Above and Nom Nom, I came across a post by Zach Lovatt which I cannot possibly compete with! His post contains a full point-by-point analysis, and he actually ate both foods to compare!
According to Dogfoodadvisor.com, A Pup Above dog food offers freshly cooked, human-grade dog food with or without grains. Their recipes contain a generous amount of named meats as the dominant source of animal protein.
They give it a 5-star rating and an “enthusiastically recommended” status!
