Training a puppy to stop pooping in the house requires patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. We’ll discuss several options within this post. I’ll also tell you about a free, step-by-step puppy potty training video series called, Potty Training Made Easy.
How to Stop Your Puppy from Pooping in the House
First, here are some steps to help you get started:
Establish a Routine. Feed your puppy at the same times every day and take your puppy outside frequently (way more frequently than you think!). Definitely take the puppy outside after eating, playing, and when they wake up.
Give them a designated place to poop/pee. Take your puppy to the same spot outside every time. The scent will reinforce them realizing they should go potty there.
Use a consistent command. Say the same thing every time, like “go potty,” or “go pee pee,” to help your puppy associate the command with the action.
Praise and reward your puppy. Always give your puppy praise with a “good boy!” or physical affection immediately after they pee or poop outside. They’ll quickly realize that doing their business will get them lovins!
Never punish your puppy for pooping in the house. I once saw a video where the person said something like, “If your puppy has an accident in the house, go get a newspaper, roll it up, and SMACK YOURSELF WITH IT.” Point being, if your puppy has an accident, it’s your fault, not theirs.
It’s your responsibility as a pet owner to learn how to train your puppy correctly and effectively. Behavior issues are never their fault.

More Tips to Stop a Puppy from Pooping Indoors
Most people don’t do these things because they don’t know about them. Nobody ever explains how important these little things are when you’re learning how to stop your puppy from pooping in the house.
Stay calm. Getting angry, shouting at your puppy or being annoyed will not encourage them to relax and follow your commands.
Imagine trying to go poop with an angry person standing over you. It’s just not a good situation – for the puppy, or for you.
Don’t rub their nose in it! Please forget all that crap (no pun intended!) about rubbing a puppy’s nose in it to show them not to do it again. Not only is this old-school, out of date and cruel, it’s just plain dumb. All this does is teach your puppy to be afraid of you and to eat poop.
Stay focused on the goal. Don’t get frustrated with your puppy. Keep following the steps in Doggy Dan’s training series and it will work. It takes time. It takes repetition. But your puppy will make the connection and get it right. Don’t give up!
Be patient with your puppy. Remember that puppies are very young. They are still learning, and it will take time. Anyone with children will tell you that toilet training takes time and patience.
Sometimes it takes children up to three years to accomplish this. Your puppy is what, 8 weeks old? Children can’t even lift their own heads at that age, yet we get frustrated with a puppy who hasn’t mastered potty training yet.
Realize your puppy is perfectly normal, just like you were when your mother was still changing your diaper 2+ years in. Give your poor puppy a break! Focus on the successes and learn to quickly forget the mistakes. Keep going with the training techniques and you and your puppy will succeed.
