Pet Training

Pet training is an important part of pet ownership.  Not only does it create a loving bond between you and your pet, but it also sets you up to have a well-behaved pet for years to come.

Effective pet training isn’t just about teaching your pet commands.  It also involves understanding your pet’s needs, communicating with your pet, and reinforcing good behavior.

In this post, I’ll give you my top recommendations for dog training and cat training.  We’ll also discuss why pet training is important and the three most common problems with pet training.

why pet training is importantWhy is Pet Training Important?

Training your pet properly is a major component of responsible pet ownership.  It not only solves behavioral issues, but it also results in a structured environment for your pet, making them feel secure in your home.

It also enhances your pet’s social skills, and creates a loving bond between the two of you.

A well-behaved pet is more likely to be included in family activities, and is often welcome at friends’ homes.  They’re also easier for a pet sitter to handle when you’re away.

Taking the time to train your pet effectively is a worthwhile investment in the overall happiness and well-being of your pet (and you!)

3 common pet training problems3 Common Problems With Pet Training

Many pet owners encounter problems when it comes to pet training.  Here are three common ones:

1.  Lack of Consistency.  Pets really need a regular routine, and also consistency in what commands they’re expected to follow.  If everyone in the household is using different commands and not interacting with the pet in the same way, the pet becomes confused.

2.  Not Understanding the Pet’s Needs.  Many pet owners don’t realize the importance of learning the specific needs of certain breeds, and of each individual pet.  Every pet has its own unique characteristics and needs training methods that suit their individual traits.

3.  Lack of Patience.  Training a pet properly takes time.  Most pets are quite eager to please their owners.  So rest assured, your pet is likely trying their best!  Impatience can lead to frustration for both you and your pet.  Learning how to train your pet properly from the beginning is key to preventing frustrating pet training problems.

1.  My best tip is to use a pet training program created by professionals.  There’s no need to reinvent the wheel.  Someone else has already figured it out!  All you have to do is follow their instructions for the best chance of success.

2.  Understand the importance of training.  It’s a worthwhile investment that will pay off.  Commit to it, and don’t give up!

3.  Know and be prepared for common challenges.  Everyone runs into obstacles while training their pet.  Again, follow professional instructions to get past any challenges and avoid them to begin with.

4.  Consistency, consistency, consistency!  Just like humans, pets need consistent repetition in order to learn new things.  Being consistent with the way you’re training your pet, and getting the whole family on the same page, will make pet training way easier.

Pet training can be a very rewarding journey that significantly improves the relationship between pets and their owners.  Your investment of time, patience and consistent effort will yield positive results that provide for a well-behaved pet and a happy home!

  1. I’m having a problem with my 91/2 week old female maltipoo. We got her at a little over 8 weeks. She was trained to go on the potty pad but now she thinks that is someting so chew on the corners so being afraid of her chocking on the blue I think plastic. We had to remove it How can I make her stop trying to chew on the puppy pad. I’ve tried giving her bone or toy but no she wants that pad and grabs at my hands clothes etc. thank you. Gusr1@yahoo.com

    1. Hi Myrna,
I think it’s best to remove the pads. For whatever reason, she’s become obsessed with it and you can’t risk her choking. I suggest you visit Doggy Dan’s website. You can search there for information to help you with this and other issues. For $1, you get 3 full days to have full access to the more than 300 dog training videos on the site…it’s worth a look. God Bless your little sweetie – she sounds so cute!
