Lemonade Pet Insurance Review: Benefits & WARNINGS

Lemonade Pet Insurance is famous for its innovative and tech-driven approach to pet health insurance. They receive good reviews because they have affordable pricing, quick and easy claims, and comprehensive, customizeable coverage. Let’s cover the benefits of Lemonade Pet Insurance and also some complaints.

* Later in this post, I’ll tell you about a not-so-great experience I had with Lemonade.  It’s not a deal breaker, but definitely worth noting.

Here are some key points to consider:

Price:  Lemonade Pet Insurance offers competitive pricing on pet insurance, with plans starting as low as $10 per month. They have some of the lowest prices in the pet insurance industry!

You also get a discount if you pay annually, and a discount if you bundle (get a policy for two or more pets).

The cost for a policy for dogs typically runs from $30 to $45 per month.

For cats, it’s usually between $13 and $20 per month.

Just as an aside, I paid way less for renter’s insurance with Lemonade than my previous company.  So I know their prices are competitive.

Coverage:  Lemonade provides accident and illness coverage, with optional add-ons for preventive care, dental, end-of-life, and physical therapy.

*Warning! Realize you have to start with a basic policy for accident and illness, then add on to your policcy for things like preventative care, dental, etc.

Customer Service: Most Lemonade Pet Health Insurance reviews are positive, with many people happy about the fast service and ease of use.

Unique Feature! Lemonade Pet Insurance donates a portion of unclaimed premiums to pet charities. (By the way, I also donate 10% of my earnings from this website to animal charities).

Claims Process:  Lemonade makes it fast and easy to file a claim using their mobile app.  Users often report quick reimbursements, sometimes within 48 hours, which can be a huge advantage.

*Warning!  If you don’t already know, pet health insurance does not pay your vet directly.  You pay your vet bill, then file a claim with the pet insurance company for reimbursement.

The good news about this is that it your vet doesn’t have to accept anyone’s pet insurance or work with the insurance companies at all.  But the bad news about it is that you have to pay upfront, then get reimbursed.

pet health insuranceUse CareCredit for Vet Bills

I suggest applying for CareCredit.  They’ll cover vet bills with promotional financing options on vet bills over $200.  I applied for a care and got approved for a $300 credit limit.

I used it for a couple of regular vet expenses, and paid the balance off in full.  They quickly increased my credit limit to $3500.

That gave me so much peace of mind knowing that I could cover up to $3500 if I had a medical emergency with one of my pets.

So you could charge the vet bill on the Care Credit card, then submit a claim for reimbursement from Lemonade for whatever portion of it is covered by your policy.

Everything can be handled on their app!  This makes Lemonade a good pick for tech-savvy pet owners.

*Warning!  Realize it’s essential to review the specific terms and conditions to ensure your policy meets your needs.

*This is where I had a problem with Lemonade.  I used their app to apply for renter’s insurance.  It was super easy, and I was delighted with the price.  But several months later, my apartment flooded and my bedroom dressers were damaged.  When I filed a claim, it was denied because I didn’t have “flood” insurance added to my policy.

I don’t live in a flood zone, so it never occurred to me to add flood coverage.  However, I do live in a garden-level apartment (partially underground), so there’s potential for flooding with heavy thunderstorms, which is exactly what happened.

My neighbor’s damages were completely covered by her insurance company.  I found out that her company had a conversation with her on the phone where they asked several questions in order to determine the best policy for her.  They made sure she had the flood coverage because she lives in a garden-level apartment.

I have to say I was furious that Lemonade hadn’t taken the time to either have a phone conversation with me or at least have a questionnaire I could’ve answered that would’ve revealed where I live and the need for flood insurance.

This is why I say doing everything in the app is cool and convenient, but you have to make sure you’re getting the help and service you need.

lemonade pet insurance complaintsLemonade Pet Insurance Cons and WARNINGS

Availability:  Lemonade Pet Insurance is only available in 37 states in the USA, which limits pet owners who live in other states.

If your state is not included, you can sign up to get a notification when they’re available in your state.

Unlimited Coverage Is Not Available. Unlike some pet insurance carriers, Lemonade does not offer an unlimited coverage option. The highest annual coverage limit available is $100,000, which might not be sufficient for pets with significant medical issues.

They don’t cover pre-existing conditions.  This is true of most health insurance companies, both human and pet.  It’s pretty much standard.  But it’s important to realize that if your pet has already been diagnosed with certain medical conditions, their veterinary expenses will likely not be covered by your policy.

You might consider calling Lemonade prior to purchasing your policy to know what is and is not covered regarding your pet’s medical issues.

Premium increases and claim denials.  There have been some complaints about premium increases upon renewal and certain claims being denied.  I’m adding this because it’s important to consider, but realize that any company, regardless of the industry, is going to have customers who weren’t happy.

It’s possible the premium increases are reasonable and standard, and it’s also possible that people thought they had coverage for things they didn’t actually have coverage for (like my flood insurance issue).

Other exclusions.  Like most pet insurance carriers, Lemonade does not cover some things like behavioral treatments, dental illnesses and some routine care like spaying and neutering.  Again, make sure you review the policy coverage before you buy.

Spaying and Neutering.  Most pet insurance companies don’t cover this (which I personally think is nonsense!)  If you need help paying to have your pet spayed or neutered, read my post, Free Spay or Neuter Clinics (includes video).  That post offers several alternatives for help paying for this.

One last possible con:  Buying a policy online or on their app may not give you the opportunity to have a real person help you make sure you’re getting the right coverage for your budget, your pet, and your pet’s medical needs.

Also, doing stuff on their app may be too high-tech for some people.  (I’m 56 years old.  I’m comfortable with doing stuff online, but unlike most younger people, I really don’t like apps.)

pet health insuranceMy Recommendation

Lemonade has good prices, and even with my flood insurance issue, I feel like they spent time, provided good service, and the representative in charge of my claim even had a meeting with her teammeats to see if there was any way they could cover it.

I recommend visiting their website to find out way more details than I’ve covered here.

If you can’t afford an expected vet bill, I think pet insurance is a must, and Lemonade provides a good policy at a low cost.  This is an inexpensive policy that will help cover vet bills, even if you get just the basic policy.
