7 ways to stop your puppy from being aggressive7 Ways to Stop a Puppy from Being Aggressive

1.  Understand the cause.  Puppies can behave aggressively for a variety of reasons:

    • Lack of proper socialization
    • Resource guarding
    • Overexcitement
    • Pain or medical issues
    • Fear or insecurity

You’ll hear Professional Dog Trainer, Doggy Dan, explain why puppies behave aggressively later in this post.

2.  Be calm when handling puppy aggression.  Don’t yell and certainly never punish your puppy with physical punishment.  Instead, say, “No!” in a firm but calm voice, then redirect their attention to appropriate behavior.

3.  Properly socialize your puppy.  Expose your puppy to various environments, people and other dogs in a controlled, positive way.  For specific tips on how to properly socialize your puppy, read my post, Socializing a New Puppy (includes video).

4.  Don’t initiate rough play.  If your puppy tends to behave aggressively, games like tug-of-war or chasing games probably aren’t a good idea.  Play games like fetch or hide-and-seek instead.

5. Put your puppy in a time-out.  When your puppy behaves aggressively, remove them from the situation and put them in a quiet space for a few minutes. Once they’ve settled down, give them praise or a treat, then allow them to continue the activity.  Praise them if their behavior is more appropriate.

6. Be consistent with the strategy.  Make sure everyone in the household is consistent on the rules for your puppy, what commands you’re using, and review these techniques together so everyone is on the same page and the puppy doesn’t get confused.

7. Learn how to stop resource guarding.  You can teach your puppy that nobody is trying steal their stuff by giving them praise when they allow you near their food bowl or when they let anybody near their belongings.
