What is Dog Reactivity?
According to the American Kennel Club, dog reactivity is when a dog reacts in an exessive, inappropriate or abnormal way to common occurances.
For example, seeing a stranger while out for a walk is a normal occurance and doesn’t elicit much of a reaction from most dogs.
However, for reactive dogs, seeing a stranger can lead to intense barking, lunging, pulling on the leash, etc., behaviors clearly out of proportion to the situation.
Sadly, these dogs get overwhelmed by their emotions and find it difficult to listen to their owner or calm down. Fear is a common reason for dog reactivity, even if it appears your dog is being aggressive.
Understanding dog reactivity and doing what your dog needs to eliminate it is the most kind, loving thing you can do for your dog. They need your help!
