Best Flea Medicine for Dogs and Cats

Advantage II by Bayer is the leading and best flea medicine for dogs and cats. It has two separate ingredients that protect your pet against current infestations and future infestations from larvae, pupae and flea eggs: Imidacloprid, which affects the central nervous system of the flea and causes the flea to become paralyzed and results in its death.

And Pyriproxifen, which kills all pupae, larvae and even eggs which form the major part of any infestation. It is suitable for pets from seven weeks old (for dogs) and eight weeks old for cats. I recommend it as the best flea medicine for dogs and cats.  Here’s why… Affiliate Disclosure

For small dogs up to 20 pounds, Advantage II should be applied between the shoulder blades at the base of the neck. Part the hair in between the shoulder blades so you can clearly see the skin.  It’s important to apply Advantage II to the skin as this will be the most effective way of clearing the infestation and giving continued protection.

Once you see the skin, squeeze the whole contents onto the skin taking special care not to get any into your pet’s mouth or eyes. For larger dogs, the same procedure should be followed (part the hair of the dog and find the skin) however, the drops should be applied in four spots evenly along the back, starting from the base of the neck between the shoulder blades to the base of the tail.

How To Apply Advantage For Cats

Part the hair at the base of your cat’s neck between the shoulder blades and apply the drops directly onto the skin, taking care to get all the contents of the tube onto the skin for maximum protection. Try not to get the drops into your cat’s eyes or mouth.

My Rating A+

Ever since I first tried Advantage for my pets, I’ve never used anything else.  It’s the best SOLUTION for fleas and ticks.

Why is My Flea Treatment Not Working?

Fleas can take over your pet and your whole house and can seem impossible to get rid of.  In my 40+ years as a pet owner, I’ve never seen flea collars, flea shampoos, flea baths, flea sprays or flea bombs work at all. You can read more about this in my article (includes video),  Pet Flea and Tick Control.

  1. Hi Debra.
I have a German Shepherd and I am quite certain that he is suffering from a flea infestation just by observing the way he scratches himself.I searched for info on the Advantage and was glad to stumble across your site.

Just a question here, you mentioned that the entire contents of a bottle should be applied for a single application.Any idea after how long will I see a difference from the Advantage.Do you recommend a follow up application and if so, after how long can I do this.
    Thank You

    1. Hi Roopesh,

For a German Shepherd, you’ll want to follow the instructions for large dogs – putting it on the back of the neck between the shoulder blades, then two more applications down the spine/back. But I’d suggest applying most of it between the shoulder blades. You put this on once per month. This will work within 12 hours. It’s quite amazing, actually. This should be applied every 30 days. Please let me know how you make out – I hope you report huge relief for your dog!

  2. I thought the video at the start of this blog was really funny and a good idea to get us interested in this flea treatment for our dogs and cats.
I will certainly remember it for the future but can we can get this product in the UK? Most of the sites I comment on are in the US.
I don’t see any mention of ticks, would I have to treat my animals separately for ticks?
    Great site, well done. Ches

    1. I’m actually not sure if they ship to the UK. I would guess so, but you’d have to go to the site to find out. Yes, Advantage II treats ticks as well. Thank you so much for the comment!

  3. I didn’t know about Advantage II, but it seems a really good medication. Do you know if it’s available just in the US or also in Europe?
I love that you explained how to choose the right dose, this has always been a problem for me, because my dog is pretty small so I never really knew how much I should give him. But I learned now for this medicine 🙂

    1. I’m assuming it’s available in Europe, but I don’t know for sure. I’ve also recently learned that a natural remedy for fleas is to boil lemons, let them steep overnight, then lightly spray the dog with the lemon juice. Fleas apparently don’t like the taste/smell, so they won’t get on your dog, and the lemon is safe for your dog’s fur and OK for your dog to lick. I’m leaning more and more lately toward natural remedies, for my pets and also myself!
