How to Train a Puppy
There’s a lot of talk about how to train a puppy with the hope of ending up with the perfect dog. It’s what we all want, but is it really possible? I think the possibility of there being a perfect dog is about the same as the possibility of there being a perfect person: zero chance! But there is hope!
How to Train a Puppy
My recommendation for the best puppy training is the Perfect Puppy Program created by Doggy Dan, Professional Dog Trainer and Behavioral Specialist, and creator of the dog training website, The Online Dog Trainer. Doggy Dan has been my #1 recommendation for puppy training for several years because his puppy training methods are kind, easy-to-follow and effective. You can read my full review of the program here.

The Best Way to Train Your Puppy
Before you get hung up on going to puppy obedience classes to learn how to achieve popular doggie tricks to impress your friends and family…honestly…we spend so much time and effort focusing on how to do commands such as sit and stay but rarely focus on the really important stuff. Think about it – has a dog ever been put to sleep (yes, I am talking about euthanization) because they didn’t do a proper sit? Or because their down command was a bit slow? Or because they didn’t stay? Of course not. Yet that’s what we all learn at puppy school!
Solving Puppy Behavior Issues
The important stuff about puppy training, like handling aggression, for example, aren’t taught at dog obedience classes. More dogs are put to sleep for aggression, barking, growling, and challenging than for any other reason. There is nothing more dangerous than an out-of-control dog, pulling you along on the leash, ignoring you when you call them. Never mind the danger to themselves, children, neighbors, strangers, or around cars and other dogs.
Learning how to train a puppy is a safety issue. For you, for your family, for people around you, and for your puppy.
So How Do I Train My Puppy?
Well, the great news is that it’s not complicated, especially with the help of Doggy Dan’s The Online Dog Trainervideo website.
Doggy Dan’s Puppy Training
Inside this website is an amazing collection of puppy training videos showing you exactly how to achieve this kind of ‘perfect’ dog. Doggy Dan has filmed the training of his puppy, Moses, from when he got him at eight weeks old, to his growing up for an entire year. In the videos, he presents a series of lessons for Moses each week that needed to be learned at that particular stage of the puppy’s life. So, you get to watch a professional dog trainer train his puppy all along the way.
Once your puppy is fully grown, the site covers every type of dog problem that you may face later on. There are in-depth videos on health, food, behavior and training. Doggy Dan’s website is truly amazing with over 250 videos showing you exactly how to achieve those five important behaviors I mentioned earlier… and much, much more!

Hi Debra, thanks for writing such a helpful post. My wife and I are thinking of getting a highland terrier next year and the subject of how to deal with a dog has been daunting.
I’ve bookmarked your post as I will definitely need it and will be watching Doggy Dan’s training videos to help me.
I’m so glad you found this before you get the dog – now you’ll be able to start the correct training from day one. I have a mini doxy…the love of my life. 🙂 Thanks so much for the comment.
What a nice article and very helpful! I really enjoyed reading it.
In fact, I have two big dogs and have problems with two of them. I suppose I have made some mistake with them when they were puppies and wasn’t conscious about it.
One of then jump on people and try to bite them, that is the reason I tied her all the time. The second one try to catch is tails only when he sees children. To tell you the truth I have never seen this in my entire life.I am very confused about these problems. Maybe you can suggest me something?
Thank you very much

I’m glad you like it. I like videos myself – it’s way easier to learn that way than to read, read, read. Thanks so much for the encouragement!
