How to Train a Puppy

There’s a lot of talk about how to train a puppy with the hope of ending up with the perfect dog. It’s what we all want, but is it really possible?  I think the possibility of there being a perfect dog is about the same as the possibility of there being a perfect person: zero chance!  But there is hope!

The Best Way to Train Your Puppyhow to train a puppy

Before you get hung up on going to puppy obedience classes to learn how to achieve popular doggie tricks to impress your friends and family…honestly…we spend so much time and effort focusing on how to do commands such as sit and stay but rarely focus on the really important stuff.  Think about it – has a dog ever been put to sleep (yes, I am talking about euthanization) because they didn’t do a proper sit? Or because their down command was a bit slow? Or because they didn’t stay? Of course not. Yet that’s what we all learn at puppy school!

The important stuff about puppy training, like handling aggression, for example, aren’t taught at dog obedience classes. More dogs are put to sleep for aggression, barking, growling, and challenging than for any other reason.  There is nothing more dangerous than an out-of-control dog, pulling you along on the leash, ignoring you when you call them. Never mind the danger to themselves, children, neighbors, strangers, or around cars and other dogs.

Learning how to train a puppy is a safety issue.  For you, for your family, for people around you, and for your puppy.

So How Do I Train My Puppy?

Well, the great news is that it’s not complicated, especially with the help of Doggy Dan’s The Online Dog Trainer video website.

  1. Hi Debra, thanks for writing such a helpful post. My wife and I are thinking of getting a highland terrier next year and the subject of how to deal with a dog has been daunting.

I’ve bookmarked your post as I will definitely need it and will be watching Doggy Dan’s training videos to help me.

What type of dog/s do you have?

    1. I’m so glad you found this before you get the dog – now you’ll be able to start the correct training from day one. I have a mini doxy…the love of my life. 🙂 Thanks so much for the comment.

  2. Hi there,

What a nice article and very helpful! I really enjoyed reading it.
In fact, I have two big dogs and have problems with two of them. I suppose I have made some mistake with them when they were puppies and wasn’t conscious about it.
One of then jump on people and try to bite them, that is the reason I tied her all the time. The second one try to catch is tails only when he sees children. To tell you the truth I have never seen this in my entire life.I am very confused about these problems. Maybe you can suggest me something?
    Thank you very much

I think your site is perfect for people who have a puppy and are looking to do some puppy training. The layout is good and simple which makes the text easy to read

    1. I’m glad you like it. I like videos myself – it’s way easier to learn that way than to read, read, read. Thanks so much for the encouragement!
